Cold War Submarine Veteran, Kenneth R. Hoover, Sr., 85, of Hummelstown, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home.

Born in Middletown, on August 30, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles Henry and Margaret E. Hulstine Hoover.

Ken was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. Ken enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. As a senior chief engineman (ENCS), he was responsible for the operation of the nuclear reactor on submarines, and served as a nuclear power instructor. In 1973 he retired from the Navy. After retirement, Ken worked for the former Furnival, working on heavy machinery, and Trans Tech Leasing, Inc. in Middletown working on Tractor Trailers. Ken was a former member of the Hummelstown American Legion Post 265, and the Fleet Reserve Association of Mechanicsburg. He enjoyed gardening, camping, reading, and spending time on his house boat.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Sue. A. Weaver Hoover, on September 26, 2001; and two brothers, Charles and Richard Hoover.

Ken is survived by his children, Kenneth R. Hoover, Jr. husband of Dixie of Lebanon, Michael A. Hoover husband of Cindy of Elizabethtown, and Cathy S. Kidd of Huntingdon; 8 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and five brothers, Dale E. Hoover of Burlington, NC, Donald Hoover (Jane) of Tilton, NH, Dennis Hoover (Sue) of Landisville, Galen Hoover (Jonni)of Mountville, and Terry Hoover (Susan) of Middletown.
