ATHENS, N.Y. Joel N. "Drifty" Van Kuren Sr., age 72, of the village of Athens, died peacefully Tuesday morning, May 4, 2010 at home. Born in Athens May 5, 1937, he was the son of the late James and Ethel (Kisselburgh) Van Kuren. He was married July 13, 1963 in Greenville, N.Y. to Rita (Lee) Van Kuren. Joel served 20 years in the US Navy, Submarine Corps serving on the Lafayette, Poseidon, Orion and Threadfin submarines, retiring as chief petty officer. After retiring from the Navy, Joel worked at Atlantic Knitting Mills in Athens and later at KAZ in Hudson, from which he retired. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Catskill; a life member of the Athens Fire Department, and member, and past commander of the TGM Post 187 American Legion of Athens. He was honored as the 2008 Parade Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade in Athens. He is survived by his wife Rita, at home; their children, Malissa and her husband Tim McKeon of Catskill and Joel Jr. and his wife Paula Van Kuren of Athens; his brother, James Van Kuren Jr. and his wife Rosalie of Clarksville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Ricky Dedrick and his fianc? Becky Hendrickson, Kim and her husband Sam Anderson, Kelly Dedrick, Matthew and Simon Van Kuren, Debra, Donald and David McKeon; two great-grandchildren, Ricky Dedrick 5th and Jadelynn Rose Anderson. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call Thursday, May 6, 2010 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Millspaugh-Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Hgts., Catskill. A service to commemorate Joel's life will be held at 8 p.m. following calling hours. The burial of cremains will be Saturday 1:00 p.m. in the New Athens Rural Cemetery.
