I won't swear to it, but I believe Chip Porter is the one who suggested in JAX that we add then and now pictures of shipmates to the forums. If it wasn't him, he's getting credit for what I think is a good idea. You'll notice I've added a "then" pic as my avatar.
The pic can be set in your profile along with your signatures.

JT,

I remember you from the picture, I think the "then" picture is a great idea to connect a face to the name as well as the time on board.

I think this really personalizes this website and will probably promote more conversation.

Regards,

Joe...

Joe,
I remember you. I thought the name sounded familiar, but the picture
avatar nailed it! This is great! Like a step back in time and establishing
contact with old shipmates. Almost like being back on the boat on patrol.
The picture makes the forum come alive. You're not just reading an
empty message on a discussion board , you're talking to old and new shipmates. I think I'm going to cry.... :P
Hey Joey, what's showing for the midnight movie?

JT,

God that brings back memories! I saw some of the pictures from the old website but could not place the names, this really helps. I remember coming to the sonar shack hanging out with some of the guys and listening to the whales and stuff. You are not going to believe this but I posted my name on another website to help find people, it was a James Madison Crew List, made a comment about my buddy Steve Starbuck as well as Eddie Jones from Chicago. About 4 weeks ago Steve was cruising around the internet and saw my listing with a mention of his name. I got an e-mail from him and I was floored to hear from him. I sent him links and stuff to register here, hope he does soon. I have not seen him for over 32 years and though I would never find him.

Steve Starbuck, John Nesbitt and I kept a beachouse on Folly Beach all the years we were on the Madison, best times of my life!

Anyway, great to talk with you.

Sincerely,

Joe...

P.S. - Who is in the picture with you in the 1970-1974 catagory, I know him too!

Joe,
You would have really enjoyed the first reunion in Charleston.
It was really great. The whole sonar gang was there. The only one
missing was Jimmy Blackwelder(Blackie). John Nesbitt was there too.
He hasn't changed at all. Remember his little Porsche 914?
I wonder if Starbuck still has his moustache? Great memories!

The other guy in the picture is Jimmy(Blackie) Blackwelder.

Blackie was standing topside watch. We had just got back from
spending the night in the Dunoon jail for being drunk and "out and
about in the night" cause we missed the last boat back to the tender
after we closed all the pubs in town. Notice the bags under the eyes
from lack of sleep!
We both were fined 150 pounds and received suspended busts. Ouch!
Good to hear from you.

JT,

I was really sorry to miss that reunion, I had some medical complications during that time and could not make it. It would have been great to see everyone after all of these years!

Hopefully I can make the next reunion. I remember the name "Blackie", is that him in the picture with you?

Later, going to watch Apprentice!

Joey, when in 70 did you come on board? I was blue crew going into the yard, but Gold coming out. I was the fellow that Tom Bowser let get run down by a drunk on A1A, LOL. Actually we were walking back to base after going into town to get my brand new bride a birthday card. My wedding had already been loused up by the delay in the Yards and I had to change it from June to July. If My memory is correct, we were starting NR boards the next day, Did not make that one. Spent almost a year in the hospital, 21 days in intensive care at Coco Beach, then Med-Evaced to Chas Nav. Hosp. in a body cast.

PS-it was not really Bowser's fault.

That first reunion was really great. We had a great many from my time frame and a good part of M-div was there. Even JR Thompson who hasn't changed a bit.

Anyone remember him playing the spoons on patrol????

Gil,

I remember you as well around 1970. I came on board in the yards during the Poseidon refit right after Sub School. We then went to Cape Canaveral to do the missile shots and down to the Carribean to do the torpedo exercises. Following that I was assigned to the Gold Crew and the rest is history 5 patrols later, got out in August 1973.

Gil, I vaguely recall your accident and also remember Tom Bowser. I remember hearing about the accident, then you were gone. I also remember your picture that you have posted wearing whites on this website. I would have to get my DD214 out to see the exact date I was transferred from Sub School. Anyway, glad you are here. It is nice hearing from a lot of the other guys. Really brings back some memories. I remember Fred Huwe on the Blue Crew as well, EJ Kennedy, Kelleher and a bunch of others that stir in the back of my head.

I see that John Garton is listed somewhere. We had an extended patrol one year and everybody was out of cig's with what appeared to be weeks to go. All the ashtrays were emtied and re-constituted, guys were smoking tea bags, etc. Unbelievably funny after the fact! John and I shared a cigar for about a week or so during that time. We lit it up between shift changes and had a few puffs and gingerly put it out for the next day. He had that thing locked up in a top secret place that nobody knew about. What a run on cigarettes when we got back to Holy Loch!

Yes, those were the days Gil, glad you are here!

Sincerely,

Joe...
