Columbus, Georgia - Sam Dudley Hart, Jr., son of Sam D. Hart and Vergie Bass Hart, passed peacefully away in hospital from complications of chronic atherosclerosis. Sam was born in Wilson, NC. relocating with family to Columbus in 1964. Sam graduated Kendrick High in 1972 and continued to Columbus College, followed by Officer Training School for the U.S. Navy. Sam received his Commission as Lieutenant in 1979 and was a proud veteran of the USS James Madison (SSBN627). Sam fulfilled his Commission in 1985, moving to Florida for law school. Sam earned his J.D. from Stetson Univ. and began a new career as an attorney, settling into private practice in Columbus a few years later. He retired in 2006 due to ill health and remained at home to care for his mom until her death in 2014. Sam is survived by his beloved dog Tooter; 1 sister, 2 brothers, 1 SIL,1 niece,1 nephew, and extended family in Tenn., NC. and GA. In addition to family, Sam leaves behind to mourn him the staff and residents, his friends and neighbors, of St. Mary's Woods Estates community, whose kindness and fellowship allowed him to live his last 5 years independently in quiet contentment. His cremated remains will be buried at sea by the US Navy. An informal memorial will be held in Columbus in September.
