Harold "Hal" Marshall

Post by Board Admin »

Harold (Hal) Eddy Marshall, age 79, of Charleston, SC, died on April 26, 2021, after a twenty-year battle with cancer. Raised in Hollidaysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Robert and Josephine Marshall. Hal is survived by his wife of 27 years, Elizabeth (Sis) Inabinet Marshall; sister, JoEllen (Josie) Steinbrunner and her husband, Karl, of Duncansville, PA; daughter, Candace Blackburn and her husband, Matt, of Tampa, FL; daughter, Kimberly Santamaria and her husband, John, of Saint Petersburg, FL; grandchildren, Katherine (Katie) Santamaria, Christopher (Chris) Santamaria, Madeline (Maddie) Blackburn, Parker Blackburn; and his adored dogs, Ashley and Daisy. Hal enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was selected for the NECEP program, and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in nuclear engineering physics. Upon graduation Hal was handpicked by Admiral Rickover to become an officer in the nuclear power program. His military career spanned thirty-seven years and included breaking through the ice at the North Pole, commanding two nuclear-powered submarines (USS Baltimore and USS Maryland), and supervising the British Navy's missile testing program. Hal wrote, "Driving submarines and working closely with each crew member has been exactly what I was meant to do." After retirement, he worked as a real estate appraiser in Charleston, SC. Hal was a man of determination, integrity, kindness, and humor. He viewed every day as a gift and appreciated simple pleasures like sunsets over the Ashley River with his wife from his back porch rocking chair. He valued spending time with his family and friends. Also, he was an avid dove and duck hunter (particularly with his hunting dog, Ashley, and his buddies in the 4th Thursday club). A virtual Celebration of Life will take place on Zoom, Thursday, April 29, at 11:00 a.m. (link available on www.jhenrystuhr.com). Memorials may be made to the organization of your choice. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting www.jhenrystuhr.com. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston
