Night Walk

It has been a while since I got on the Reunion Website. I was surprised and pleased to see the interest in the Patrol Poetry section of the Discussion Forums.
The poem I am posting today was written when I was in sub school – Groton, Conn – I was unmarried but very serious about my wife, Jenny. Some of you know her from the 627 ship parties, others from the reunion meetings. This is one of those poems that practically wrote itself. I think you will recognize a young love. I have made very few changes to it since the night of September 7, 1967. The name of the poem is :

Night Walk
Hi there moon, you’re late tonight.
I wonder where you’ve been;
I was lonesome without your light
And no one to talk to but the wind.
While you were gone, did you see my love?
Is she still alright?
A month has passed since I saw her,
But it seems like years tonight.
And you, little star, did you see her too;
Is that why your light is so bright?
Did she perhaps smile at you,
Or make a wish tonight?
Truthfully, did she mention my name
As she said her prayers?
Tell me please, for then I’ll know
If she really cares.
