Post by Board Admin »

Richard Thomas "Tom" Lightel was born in Lock Haven, PA, on September 27, 1943, and passed away suddenly on June 10, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father Jerome J. Lightel and brother Jerome "Jerry" Lightel. Tom is survived by his mother Helena Lightel; sisters Joan Scheck and husband Rev. Ray Scheck of Monrovia, MD, Nancy Lightel of Washington, DC, and Helena Wilson and husband Bill of Austin, TX; sister-in-law Sheny Lightel; nieces and nephews Cristina, Charles, Sindu and Liliana Scheck; Roxane Wilson, Jaden Wilson and partner Michael Harper; and Teresa, JJ, Erika and Kristina Lightel.

Tom graduated from Salesianum High School in Wilmington, DE, in 1962, where he distinguished himself for the best time in long distance running for seven years in the state of Delaware. After high school, he attended the University of Delaware and graduated from the United States Naval Submarine School in New London, CT, as a frogman and underwater repairman. After being discharged from the Navy, Tom remained in New London and attended Mitchell College where he studied literature. He then moved to Big Rapids, MI, and received an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Automotive Services at the Ferris School. Tom owned and operated an automotive repair shop for several years. He left the ice and snow for sunny Texas, which he called home since 1983.

Tom was an avid reader and was always available to show a child how to throw a ball, ride a bike, play cars and trains or just be someone to play with. He will be fondly remembered by his family, friends and community as a talented, kind and generous person. Tom's quality of work and attention to detail as well as his humor and quick wit will be cherished by those who knew him.

The family will receive friends at Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rockwall Chapel Wednesday, June 18, 2008, from 6:00 until 9:00pm with a funeral service at 7:00pm. The Rev. Raymond Scheck will officiate.
